The European Union an economic or rather a political project?

Presented by: Dr. Danuta Kabat Rudnicka
Cracow University of Economics

Abstract

The idea of European unification is not new, but it could only be realized in the second half of the 20th century, moreover, it was a peace project aimed at overcoming the atrocities of war. And since the political goals could not be realized in the 1950s, the founding fathers decided to proceed with the building of economic foundations of the European edifice. There is no doubt that this Europe, which embodies integration processes, is an economic community with the four freedoms, a well-functioning competition policy and a monetary union with a single currency – the euro. But is it an economic union – not necessarily. Moreover, the narrative about a political union, a community of law and values, or even a social Europe is present in the public space, but is it really so? So let us try to answer the question of what is the European construction and where the integration processes are heading to?
