Learning Through Uncertainty: Focus on What You Can Control
In times of uncertainty, when daily life feels unsettled, education becomes a source of stability, purpose and hope. At LAU’s Adnan Kassar School of Business (AKSOB), Adjunct Assistant Professor Maya Shayya embraces this role, guiding students to focus on what remains within their reach.
“During difficult moments, learning helps us regain a sense of direction,” Shayya says. “We may not control what is happening around us, but we can control how we respond, with discipline, curiosity and commitment.”
Through interactive case studies, simulations and collaborative work, students engage with real-world challenges while strengthening their analytical thinking. These approaches create space to reflect, adapt and move forward with confidence, even as uncertainty persists beyond the classroom.
This learning experience is grounded in a deliberate balance between empathy and academic rigor. At AKSOB, supporting students does not mean lowering standards, but creating a structured environment where resilience and professional growth take shape. “Rigor gives students a sense of stability,” Shayya explains. “It reminds them that progress is still possible, even when everything else feels uncertain.”
This commitment is reinforced through a shared institutional mission. With the support of AKSOB leadership and the Center for Innovative Learning (CIL), faculty are able to sustain learning that remains consistent, interactive and responsive. By integrating advanced teaching tools and approaches, CIL helps ensure that students stay engaged, connected and progressing in their academic journey without interruption.
For Shayya, the strongest message of hope comes from her students. “Their dedication reminds us that education is not only about knowledge,” she reflects. “It is about resilience, and the belief that better days are ahead.”
